UVic Employee Car Share Program

Providing Support for Sustainable Transportation Choices!

The UVic Employee Car Share Program is for those full time, continuing employees who use transit, cycle or walk to commute to and from campus but occassionally need access to a vehicle for either personal or business use.

This program is possible through a partnership with the Victoria Car Share Co-op, a local car sharing organization in Greater Victoria.

What is Car Sharing?

Car Sharing is essentially a network of vehicles used by a group of people (members) who generally walk, cycle or take transit, occassionally need access to a vehicle, do not want to purchase a second vehicle, or want to reduce their transportation footprint.

Members of a the Car Share Coop have access to a fleet of vehicles whenever they need them.

Car sharing contributes to urban health by:

  • Less traffic congestion and noise
  • Lower green-house gas emissions
  • A more vibrant cityscape with people, rather than cars at the core
  • Reduced demand for on-street parking
  • Fewer parking lots, narrower roads and more green-space

How does the UVic Program Work?

Employees simply fill out the UVic Employee Car Share Application program and submit it to the Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability.

Once eligibility is confirmed, the employee becomes a member in the Victoria Car Share Coop. By doing so the UVic employee commits to continuing to use sustainable transportation to get to and from campus and forgos the right to purchase a parking permit on campus. Note: this includes semester, annual and flex-pass permits.

The membership "share price" of $400 is paid for on your behalf by the University of Victoria -- the employee only pays for his/her own useage of the vehicles, the monthly administration fee, and any damages occurred.

Where are the Car Share Vehicles?

There are four car share vehicles on campus, two located in parking lot 2 next to Campus Security Services, and two located in Family Student Housing. Click here to check out a map of vehicle locations.

There are over 20 vehicles in Greater Victoria that members have access to -- these include compacts, minivans and pick up trucks. During your program orientation you will be given all the details you need about the coop fleet.

Can I use the Car Share Vehicles for Business or Pleasure?

Both! The employee is responsible for paying his or her useage and administrative fees each month. Should he or she have used the Car Share vehicle for approved university business, they would simply submit a gas mileage claim as per standard university policy.

Why does UVic have this program?

The University of Victoria has a goal of reducing motor vehicle traffic to and from campus. We offer a number of programs, called TRAVEL CHOICES, that are designed to assist students, faculty and staff to use other modes than the single occupant vehicle. You can find out more about our TRAVEL CHOICES program here.

One of the reasons why we have the Employee Car Share program is to provide support for those who have made the committment to reducing their transportation impact. With more people using sustainable transportation it reduces congestion on the roads and makes better use of our campus parking inventory.

How do I apply?

Download the Employee Application form or the Family Student Housing Application form and submit to The Office of Planning & Sustainability.

You can submit your application at anytime during the year but please note that there are a limited number of spaces in this program. If all spaces are full, your application would be put into a cue for the next available spot.
