Since 1988, the UVic Alumni Association has offered enriched vacation travel to alumni and friends of the university. Normally a feature is published in each issue of the Torch promoting upcoming trips. No such feature is available for this issue, but members who are on our mailing list will receive notification as soon as plans for the fall of 1999 are made final. (Anyone wishing to be added to this list may do so by calling the alumni affairs office at (250) 721-6000 or 1 (800) 808-6828.)
The April Primavera sailing of Royal Olympic's Stella Solaris was offered to our members in the fall of 1998. The 26-day trip, hosted by Dr. Peter Smith, sold out almost immediately. More than 200 UVic passengers set sail from Galveston, Texas on April 6. A second itinerary of 21 days on a similar ship operated by Royal Olympic was offered and more than 70 people were booked on this sailing which left Montego Bay, Jamaica April 18. Both ships will cross the Southern Atlantic (after visiting several islands in the Caribbean) then continue through the Mediterranean Sea with stops at several ports before finally arriving in Athens.
The number of alumni travelers is unprecedented and is brought about by favourable pricing and itineraries. If a similar offer from Royal Olympic is available next year, the alumni association will consider it in addition to other travel programs.
