DIANA KRALL, WHOSE CROSSOVER SUCCESS has made
her one of the most popular jazz performers
of her generation, will accept an honorary
fine arts doctorate at fall convocation ceremonies
Nov. 12. The Nanaimo-born vocalist and pianist
won the 2003 Grammy Award for best jazz vocal.
Her charity work has included a concert to
benefit the leukemia/bone marrow transplant
program at Vancouver General Hospital.
Honorary doctorates will also
be presented to distinguished UVic physicist
Alan Astbury, artist and conservationist Robert
Bateman and Frank Calder, Canada's first Aboriginal
cabinet minister. Nearly 1,300 new graduates
will be granted degrees, diplomas and certificates
at four ceremonies on Nov. 10 and 12.
