WRITER RICHARD VAN CAMP HAS APPLIED his infectious wit and storyteller’s soul to Welcome Song for Baby, an illustrated lullaby book given to the families of British Columbia’s 2008 newborns. It’s a community literacy project funded, largely, by the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

Van Camp told the Vancouver Sun, that he was inspired to write the lullaby’s chorus “Hey ya hey, hey ya hey, hey ya hey” because it’s something his mom always says when she’s overjoyed. “It’s something I don’t think she even knows that she does. I love it.”

A member of the Dogrib First Nation of Fort Smith, NWT, Van Camp completed a UVic Writing degree in 1997. He teaches creative writing at UBC.
