Cycling Advisory Committee to Replace Bicycle Users Committee
The first meeting of the Cycling Advisory Committee will be on Dec 5th, noon to 1 PM in ASB 110 (lunch included!). We welcome participation from staff, students and faculty cyclists across the university who have an interest in helping advance UVic’s cycling culture and infrastructure. Here are the Terms of Reference for the committee. Contact action@uvic.ca if you would like to get involved.
McKenzie Avenue (McGill to Haro) Upgrade
Plans for a proposed McKenzie Avenue upgrade are available online. The upgrade will affect this two lane through-campus arterial between McGill Road and Haro Road by adding sidewalks, bike lanes, medians, left turn lanes, rain gardens, plus a traffic roundabout at Finnerty Road. Not shown on the Corridor Design Concept PDF but mentioned in an open house is a demand controlled traffic-light exit from the west end of Lot 3, the location of the proposed new Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA) and adjoining parkade. Road construction is planned for 2012, from May through August.
North Langford Connector
Cyclists in the Langford area north of Highway 1 can use the Thetis–Langford Connector Trail (2.3 MB PDF) to connect with the Galloping Goose Regional Trail. This is a hiking trail with steep hilly sections, so caution is advised.
Bike Lane Extension at McKenzie and Borden
The east-bound bike lane on McKenzie Avenue at the Borden Street intersection has been extended
west to the corner to create a continuous bike lane from Borden to Cedar Hill Road.
Bicycle Access Patterns
Results of the 2010 Traffic survey have been used to add a new page to the bicycle access patterns collection. These pages show that the number of daily cycling trips to and from UVic has almost doubled since 2000.
Updated Modal Splits
This table shows percentages of travelers to UVic using a variety of transportation modes for the last few traffic surveys. Good weather during the most recent survey week in October 2010 may have played a part in the rise in cycling and pedestrian percentages. The transit percentage was down. Use of an automobile by drivers and passengers was below 50% for the first time in the survey history.
