            P.E.A. UVIC CHAPTER - YEAR 2009 A.G.M.

            --------------------------------------

                      TREASURER'S REPORT

                      ------------------

During the 2008/2009 year the job of Treasurer has involved the

usual tasks of writing cheques, signing of invoices for luncheons and the AGM and keeping an eye on the FAST account to make sure that there are enough funds for the UVic Chapter to pay for the various services it provides to its members.

A budget was prepared for discussion at the Executive meeting

on 10 December 2008 and was published on the Chapter website in January 2009 so that members could get an idea of our expenditure plans for this year.

Also, the application for the annual grant from the Association was prepared and submitted. The application was successful and the grant of $8,727.32 was deposited in the Coast Capital account on 11 April 2009. Once again the grant has increased reflecting the fact that we had by then grown to over 800 members in the UVic Chapter of the P.E.A. The current figure is over 830 members.

Again, this year, our largest single item was for a social event, the very successful 'Fol-de-Rol' held at the University Club on a wet Fall evening on 28 October 2009. The total cost was $3210.65 which covered hors d’oeuvres and 1 drink for 85 members and guests. Also included was $150 for door prizes and $375 to hire the musicians (two of whom were Chapter members) who played a great range of rock and popular music. The turnout could have been better but it was a wet evening and it is a busy time of the year. We also had a very successful ‘Pond Party’ in June and a Blues Bash in February.

In December 2008 we made our usual donation to the Mustard Seed Food Bank which distributes to food banks in Victoria. This year we increased our donation to $800, based on one dollar per member.

The cost of seminars has increased this year as the Committee has taken on new members and increased its activities and include refreshments at each seminar. Expenditure has increased to about $250 for gift certificates and refreshments.

The Local Reps met on 2 occasions: in April and October 2009. As usual these were very useful meetings at which a lot of information was exchanged. The latest one included a briefing by Labour Relations Officer Ernie Gorrie on the basics of the bargaining process to achieve a Collective Agreement.

After a gap of 2 years, the annual one-day retreat for the Chapter Executive was held at Dunsmuir Lodge. Members spent the whole day discussing a wide range of topics including how to involve members in Chapter activities and planning for some upcoming surveys of what our members’ expectations are of the P.E.A.

The A.G.M. held in November 2008 in the Haro Room drew a very good attendance. This year we have booked the larger Arbutus/Queenswood room in anticipation of a larger crowd. A luncheon was provided at a cost of $591.25. The additional $90 cost of the Haro Room was reimbursed, as usual, by the Provincial Association.

There were no large capital expenditures during this financial year.

The details of the income and expenditure are presented on a separate

page and the final statement shows that the UVic PEA Chapter

overall financial position (bank balance Plus FAST balance Plus cash) at 31 October 2009 was a positive amount of

$2,737.55 after cheques written for a total of $9,692.17. This compares with a positive

balance of $6,277.50 at the same time last year after cheques written for $10,665.00.

Any member wishing to view the accounts in more detail is welcome to do

so in my office at a mutually convenient time.

I would like to thank my colleagues on the Executive for their help with this job.

Respectfully submitted

Vincent J. Connor
