5. Committee Reports

51 Internal committees

511 Bargaining (Gore)

The Bargaining Committee is continuing to meet on a weekly basis and

is considering the issues in detail, taking into account the advice

from the Executive and the responses to the results of the

questionnaire.

A presentation of the issues was given to the local reps and useful

feedback was obtained.

It is hoped to be ready for bargaining in late April.

512 Local Representatives (Corner)

The new local rep in the Fraser building is Vicki Simmons.

The Chapter has filled its quota for the PEA Convention in May from

among the local reps at the last meeting.

At that meeting there was a general discussion about preparedness or

for the next earthquake. Among many things discussed, the

importance of not pulling the fire alarm was strongly emphasized,

unless, of course, a fire has broken out immediately after the

earthquake.

As a result of the discussion of this report, it was agreed that the

UVic Chapter Chairperson would write to Richard Piskor to ask what

the University is doing to improve preparedness on-campus for the

next earthquake and to improve communication with all University

employees on this subject.

In the meantime, members were urged to re-read the 'Emergency

Procedures & Information' chart that was supplied by the

University a few years ago and to act on its recomendations of

things that each of us can do now, before the next earthquake.

513 Seminars (Cooper Little)

The RESP seminar was well received and provided some useful

information.

On 19 March 2001, Dana Lynn Seaborn from the Metis Community

Services is booked to give a seminar entitled 'Where are Victoria's

Hundreds of "Half Breeds" Hiding?' as the PEA contribution to UVic

Diversity Week.

Another seminar on the UVic Pension Plan has been booked for

Wednesday 11 April 2001.

Four Seminars on Bargaining have been booked; the details will be

circulated to members in due course.

The current Chair of the Seminars Committe, Maggie Cooper Little,

has given notice that she intends to stand down from the Committee

when her term finishes in November. It was agreed that the new Chair

need not be on the Executive.

MOTION (Corner/Connor)

That Maggie Cooper Little be thanked for her very considerable

efforts in running the Seminars Committee for the last 3 years.

516 Elections (Gore)

Convention in May: Vincent Connor, Maggie Cooper Little, John Hall

and Morag McNeill.

Four more members put their names forward at the local reps meeting:

Ian Thornton, John Dorocicz, Sheryl Karras and Susan Corner; Vicki

Simmons was nominated as an alternate.

It was noted that Tuesday 20 March 2001 is the deadline for

resolutions to be tabled at the Convention.

issues that might be discussed at the Convention.

52 Joint committees

Nothing to report.

522 Benefits Committee (Wood)

Nothing to report.

523 Job Evaluation Committee (Corner)

Job evaluation is continuing on its planned course; 72 of 74

questionnaires have been evaluated and the Committee had another

productive meeting with Ted Byrnes, the consultant.

It was emphasized that the Committe has one chance to do the

benchmarks properly and, as these are the basis for the whole

process, it is important not to rush this stage of the work of

the Committee.

524 Performance Review Committee (Gore)

A response from Human Resources to matters discussed previously is

still pending. Nothing further to report.

525 Equity Working Group (Cooper Little)

Nothing to report.

531 Association Executive (Schneider)

The Government Licenced Professionals (GLP) had some problems with

the PEA Executive and these were likely to be raised at the

Convention. The matter of whether the Convention would remain an

annual event or would become a biennial event would also be

discussed.

Some minor changes to the PEA Constitution are likely to be

proposed.

The President and the Executive Director met the leader of

the provincial Liberal Party at which there was a frank exchange

of political views and at which the power of the PEA was

recognized.

532 Coalition of Unionized University Employees (Gore)
