Minutes from Sept. 30th, 1998 beginning at noon

Present: Glen Darling (chair), Tom Gore, Maggie Cooper Little,  Ian Thornton, Dick Chappell,  Martin Milner, Bernice Wood and John Forde.
Absent: Jane Kovach 

1. MOVED (Thornton/Gore) that the agenda be approved.

2. MOVED (Gore/Thornton) that the minutes of September 24th, 1998, be approved as amended.

3. Urgent Business:

3.1 Chapter By-Election
The results of the Executive By-election were as follows:
    Total ballots received: 132
    Spoiled ballots:        4
    Total ballots counted   128
    Cast for Susan Corner   58
    Cast for Berenice Wood  70
Berenice Wood will, therefore, fill the vacant term, which will expire in
November 1999. Darling welcomed Berenice Wood to the Executive.
4. Chair's Remarks and Correspondence.
4.1  The new collective agreement was ratified by the Board of Governors at the September 28, 1998 meeting.

4.2  Amended ballots for the Provincial PEA Executive Election have now been distributed to members.

4.3  UVIC has rejected a proposal of CUPE 951 to re-classify two PEA positions as part of the CUPE  bargaining unit.

4.4  Memo from the VP Academic re Review of the University Librarian will be circulated to Directors.

5. Reports
5.1 Staff Officer Report no report

5.2 CUUE (Darling)

The meeting of CUEE representatives with Andrew Petter scheduled for September 28 was cancelled by the Minister's office. Another date has not yet been set.
5.3 Seminars Committee (Cooper Little)
A survey requesting feedback on the Summer 1998 seminars was circulated on the A&AP listserv, and several responses have been received. A two-part video, "How to Deal With  Difficult People" will be shown October 6 and 8.
6. Business Arising
6.1 PEA Buttons
Gore will again circulate to Directors the URL with the PEA button designs. Comments are requested.
6.2 PEA Barbecue (Chappell)
It was proposed that a PEA barbecue be held at Caddy's Pub on October 30, 1998. This event could follow the All Candidates Meeting. Chappell will coordinate this with the Chair of the Elections Committee. It was also suggest that members be surveyed through the A&AP listserv regarding interest in attending.
7. Other Business:
7.1 Donations Policy
Gore reviewed discussion on a donation to the APEC Protestor's Legal Support Fund by the Provincial PEA at their recent meeting. It was suggested that Chapter members be encouraged to express their views on the issue of donations, although this type of support would fall beyond the scope of the Chapter constitution.
7.2 Provincial AGM
The Provincial PEA AGM will be held October 26, 1998. Directors and Local Representatives wishing to attend should notify the PEA office. Travel expenses and salary replacement will be covered by Provincial PEA.
8. MOVED (Chappell) that the meeting be adjourned. Meeting adjourned at 1:05 pm.
