Risk Management News
On June 06, 2007 the University of Victoria was presented with
an award from WorkSafeBC for it's involvment and success with WorkSafeBC's
Focus Firm Initiative; the initiative relys upon partnerships between
employers and WorkSafeBC officials in order to support health and
safety in the workplace. With over 500,000
workplaces in British Columbia and only 2,800 WorkSafeBC employees
these partnerships help to better monitor and reduce
the number of workplace incidents.
Since joining the Focus
Firm Initiative in 2002, UVic has experienced a total reduction
of workplace incidents and claims by 42%. UVic is happy to accept
the WorkSafeBC award as health and safety are clear priorities on
campus.

The Risk Management Steering Committee (originally name the Health
and Safety Steering Committee and later the Committee on Occupational
Health and Safety and Related Matters) was established in March
2000.
The Steering Committee is the vehicle for receiving the required
information from all Health and Safety Committees, including research
safety committees, joint health and safety committees, local health
and safety committees, emergency planning, campus security and
such other committees as may be appointed from time to time by
the appropriate Vice-President.
The Committee is also responsible for recommending to the appropriate
Vice-President the assignment of responsibilities and provision
of resources to address health, safety and environmental issues.
