Arthur Bunster was the most enigmatic brewer/politician that British Columbians had ever seen; and they saw a lot of him!

Arthur Bunster was born in Ireland.  After arriving in Victoria, and throughout his life, he tried his hand at many business ventures.  He was involved in farming, liquor importation, real estate speculation, and milling.  He owned the Colonial Brewery from 1859-1882.  Being mainly an investor rather than a full-fledged brewer, he hired a professional brewer for his operation.  Arthur Bunster was an advocate for brewers in many political causes and eventually became a Member of Parliament.  He spoke out against proposed taxation on brewing supplies, provided incentive for farmers to grow barley and hops on the island, and spoke out against the temperance movement.
