William Steinberger was the first Commercial Brewer in Victoria.  Steinberger arrived in Victoria in with the mass influx of the gold rush.  Rather than following the path to the Fraser river Steinberger opened a brewery instead.  Steinberger opened the Victoria Brewery, the first in Victoria, on s site near Swan Lake in 1858.  He operated the brewery for two years and left in 1860.  After he left the brewery he spent time in Yale, and Big Bend, before he returned to Victoria in 1874 where he spent time as a distiller and then a farmer.
