COAL MINES, NEAR VICTORIA, B. C.
The coal obtained at Nanaimo, although it burns rapidly,
and is excessibley dirty, answers sufficiently well for steaming
purposes, and is not likely to be soon exhausted. On Newcastle
Island which, with Protection Island, form the shelter of
the harbour, coal has been worked to a considerable extent,
and found good. It has also been discovered cropping out on
the Chase River, a few miles up the country, and further inland
at a spot known as Pemberton's Camp.
