The UVic Writer's Guide
Quoting From Primary Sources
A primary source is one that you work with directly, without interpretation by
another writer.
In a literary essay the primary sources will be the works you
are discussing, letters or interviews by the author and so on.
A secondary source is mediated by someone commenting on the primary sources: a critic,
biographer, historian, or an encyclopedia, for example.
