The UVic Writer's Guide
Quoting A Quotation In Another Work
(Citation At Second Hand)
Often you will find an interesting passage from a primary source
quoted in a secondary source--a critic quoting a passage from
an earlier writer, for example.
Where possible, it is best to find the original work and to quote
from it, but sometimes this is impossible, if, for example, the
quoted material is not in the Library. In this case, you should
indicate that you were unable to consult the original: the text
should make clear what the original source is, and the citation
should read
(qtd. in Hawkins 29).
