Discourse
Originally a term for an extensive speech or written work, the
term has become much used in recent critical approaches to literature
to indicate any coherent subset of language which establishes
its own expectations and assumptions (its ideology). Thus there is a discourse appropriate to literary criticism
that is quite distinct from the discourse appropriate to writing
about hockey or physics.
