An absolute phrase is another useful linking device; for example, "His nose was
running and his hands were shaking" and "He left the theatre"
can be combined as
"His nose running and his hands shaking, he left the theatre."
The absolute uses a participle to create a phrase which modifies the entire sentence rather
than a specific word.
