Securing your wireless connection: Windows

XP Users - Beware! Aegis client deactivates fast user switching.

Windows users can connect to the UVic Wireless LAN with the 802.1x support provided by the Aegis Client. This piece of sofware is provided by UVic for installation onto each user's laptop.

To perform the initial one-time setup for your Windows laptop, follow these steps:

1. Ensure you have a Netlink ID and password;
2. Check that you have the required hardware and software;
3. Ensure that your Windows operating system has been updated and patched to secure it from intrusions from over the network;
4. Ensure that your wireless card has been installed along with the required driver software (see the installation instructions provided with your wireless card);
5. Obtain the Aegis Client;
6. Position yourself in an area with coverage;
7. Perform the initial install; and
8. Reboot and perform the configuration.

For each subsequent use, follow these steps:

1. Position yourself in an area with coverage; and
2. Verify that you have been connected.
