Proposal for Term Paper (500 words +, 10%) due March 16.
Consult me in person about possible topics and trajectories for the term paper. In general, the paper should broadly relate to the concerns and materials studied in the course. Once you have settled on a workable topic, compose a clear and cogent proposal of about 500 words that fulfills the following requirements: a) states your prospective argument, and b) shows how your argument will articulate with the existing scholarship. Append an annotated bibliography of at least six items of scholarship, stating in each case the thesis or main claim and your likely engagement or critique of the piece. Sign up for a one-on-one consultation.
Proposals should give all the signs of due diligence: demonstrate familiarity with the state of the question by reading around in the relevant scholarship; track down references and conduct keyword searches on electronic texts where available (e.g., library databases, eChaucer, Online Gower Bibliography, MED). For example, if proposing to study the role of mirrors as technical mediating devices in Gower’s Confessio Amantis, you should have first identified relevant instances (noting the presence of mirrors in specific tales; showing an awareness of cognate terms and synonyms including “speculum” or “glas”; indicating how the book-as-mirror, here and elsewhere including Gower’s Mirour de l’Omme, is a pertinent leitmotif). Then explain what work has been done on the question and outline your likely arguments.
In other words, your proposal should show that your research is already advancing.
