XCITE Lab news

News from 2023

November 24, 2023

A lot happened in 2023! Nolan and Jericho graduated with their PhD degrees and embarked on new research positions at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and at Dana Faber Cancer Insitute in Boston. Nathan got his BSc and Josephie is continuing her Physics studies at UVic. Congratulations to all, thank you for your great work and good luck in your new positions!

We also welcomed new MSc students Olivia and Jade who both transferred to PhD in August. Olivia is working on the development of our low-cost radiotherapy system and Jade is investigating very high-energy electrons for cancer radiotherapy. Deae-eddine and Alison joined us as postdoctoral fellows from Morocco and Canada. Deae-eddine is working on the development of x-ray FLASH radiotherapy machine in collaboration with TibaRay. Alison will work on unlocking the potential of photon-counting CT scanners.

We were successful with awards. Jericho's PMB publication on perovskite detectors was highlighted in Physics World. Jericho became an Early Career Scholar at the 2023 Winter Institute of Medical Physics in Breckenridge in Colorado. Alex won a Best Presentation Award at the 2022 FRPT meeting in Barcelona. Jade won first place at Science Spoken Succinctly and Jericho won first place at the JR Cunningham Young Investigator Symposium at the 2023 CARO-COMP Joint Scientific Meeting in Montreal. Nathan won Best Physics and Astronomy Poster Award at UVic Honour's Fest. Magdalena became a Member of the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

2023 CARO-COMP

We have started new research projects, too. Thanks to great support from the CERN CLEAR team, we were able to perform VHEE experiments on two different occasions. We started a collabration with a drosophila expert Thomas Corentin Esmangart de Bournonville from EPFL in Lausanne. We are also collaborating with RaySearch on treatment planning with VHEE. In terms of low-cost radiotherapy, apart from Michael Weil we are working with Orimtech in Chicago. And finally, we are working with U of Sydney ImageX on x-ray imaging and radiotherapy research. Lots going on in the lab and more is to come!

2023 CARO-COMP

The reason why updates were delayed is that Magdalena spent 2022/2023 on sabbatical. She did research at Centro Atomico Bariloche, the University of Sydney and the Czech Technical University. She had a wonderful year abroad but also is very happy to be back in Victoria.

XCITE lab trip 2021

August 5, 2021

Following last year, we set out on an XCITE lab trip in 2021 as well. This time around, we kayaked about 9 km to Portland Island from Canoe Cove. The paddle out was a bit exciting with some good waves creted by ferries and boats resulting in quite a bit of water in Pierre-Antoine and Nathan's kayak, but nobody capsized! We camped at Arbutus Point and shared the campground with one more group. In the afternoon, some of us hiked around the island, while some hang out on the beach. Alex and Devon prepared delicious chicken burritos for dinner and thankfully made too much and had to share. At night, we played with beautiful bioluminescence in the ocean. Thank you everyone for attending this splendid trip!

We are please that Varian Medical will be supporting our research to investigate the use of high DQE efficiency MV imaging panel for megavoltage cone beam CT imaging during radiation therapy. We are very excited about this unique research opportunity!

Chelsea has joined the Lab!

March 4, 2016

Chelsea Dunning, a 1st year MSc. student and the capitan of the Physics volleyball team, decided to work on an x-ray fluorecence CT project for her MSc. thesis and therefore joined the lab. Chelsea has a very good background in XFCT, as she presented it at multiple (all possible?) occasions during her UVic courses. You can checkout what Chelsea likes to do scientifically and in her spare time in the Memmbers tab. Welcome Chelsea!

Dylan has joined the Lab!

January 4, 2016

Dylan Breitkreutz, a Vanier scholar and the winner of the 2016/17 AAPM/RSNA graduate scholarship, joined the XCITE Lab as a PhD. student. Dylan arrived from the University of Alberta in Edmonton and he will be working on designing a kilovoltage radiotherapy source for treatments of deep seated targets. Welcome Dylan!

XCITE Lab featured in Science Matters

December 14, 2015

Our research has been featured in the Fall 2015 edition of Science Matters, the alumni newsletter of UVic Faculty of Science. Yay!

Nolan and Spencer have joined the Lab!

October 15, 2015

Nolan Esplan and Spencer Bialek are the new members of the XCITE Lab. While Nolan will be working on Monte Carlo simulations of XFCT, Spencer will be developing small animal CT imaging QA procedures for conformal radiotherapy system and will be funded by XStrahl. Welcome Nolan and Spencer!

Proton-induced XFCT presentation at WMIC

September 8, 2015

Magdalena presented "Experimental validation of proton-induced x-ray fluorescence imaging for visualization of gold nanoparticles" at the World Molecular Imaging Congress in Honolulu. This was the first attendance of a group member at a molecular imaging meeting, but there will be more to come, as the lab's focus will slowly shift towards molecular imaging. We would like to thank Hokkaido University Global Station for Quantum Medical Science and Engineering for providing travel support for the meeting.

Chris has joined the Lab!

August 20, 2015

Chris Johnstone has become the first member of the XCITE Lab! Chris will work on developing commissioning and quality assurance procedures for small animal radiotherapy machines. Chris has a lot of experience with dose measurements of kilovoltage x-ray beam and this PhD project is a good fit for him. Welcome Chris!
