Clickers

Chem101 uses the iClicker Personal Response System as a means of involving YOU as an active participant in the class; lectures are otherwise an almost entirely passive experience for students, especially in large classes such as Chemistry 101. Clickers give you a way of establishing how well you're understanding the material as you progress through the course, and also allow you to inform the instructor as to how well he is teaching the material. You'll find that your instructors will go over content again where the class is obviously struggling. If you're often struggling with the questions, seek help early.

UVic Learning Systems provides information on iClickers, including how to register your clicker.

Clickers cost $47.50 new from the bookstore for the second generation iclicker. Used first-generation clickers, which are also fine for Chem 101 and 102, are about $31. However, because your textbook package includes a $10 mail-in rebate for a new clicker, and you will be able to sell your second-generation one, we recommend buying the second generation one. Note: clickers are being increasingly used across campus, so you will almost certainly use them for multiple courses.

We will base a small percentage of your final mark (3%) on your in-class participation and performance with the iClicker Personal Response System. CHEM 101 uses the iClicker Personal Response System as a means of encouraging you to attend lectures and to participate in problem solving exercises that serve to increase your ongoing engagement and involvement with the course, and to provide you with immediate feedback regarding your understanding of the class material.

Studies have shown that such personal response systems generally increase students’ engagement and participation in university classes, and thereby provide an additional valuable incentive for students to keep up with the course material and to attend the lectures, both of which enhance learning and student success.

You will be rewarded for participating with the iClicker by getting a free 3% of your grade for using your clicker on at least 80% of the days in which we record participation (if you participate less than 80%, your 3% will be prorated accordingly). You don't have to answer the questions correctly, just provide any response and you'll be credited.

Clicker points will be based on participation in CHEM 101 classes on the following dates, depending on your section. However, clicker questions will be used in most lectures from the beginning of the course.

Section A01: Sept. 20, 24, 27; Oct. 1, 4, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25, 29; Nov. 1, 5, 8, 19, 22, 26, 29
Section A02: Sept. 19, 25, 26; Oct. 2, 3, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, 31; Nov. 6, 7, 20, 21, 27, 28
Section A03: Sept. 19, 24, 26; Oct. 1, 3, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, 29, 31; Nov. 5, 7, 19, 21, 26, 28

To receive clicker participation points, students must bring their own clickers to class. The website of UVic Learning Systems provides information on iClickers, including how to register your clicker:
http://elearning.uvic.ca/iclicker/students

To receive clicker participation points, students must do the following:

1) You must obtain a UVic computer account (Netlink ID) to use the clicker system.

Instructions for obtaining a Netlink ID are provided here: http://www.uvic.ca/systems/services/loginspasswords/netlinkid/index.php

2) Register the iclicker on-line. Go to this web site http://elearning.uvic.ca/iclicker/students and follow the steps. You start by logging into USource using your UVic NetLinkID. Your clicker ID is on the back of the device and on the led screen of the second generation models when you turn them on. If you don’t register your clicker for the course on this site (above), you won’t receive any clicker points.

3) Bring your own clicker to class every day, and use it.

If you participate in clicker questions in 80% or more of the above 18 classes (i.e. in 14 or more classes), you will receive the maximum of 3% of your final grade.

If you participate in fewer than 14 classes, you will receive the following prorated percentages:

13 classes: 2.8%, 8 classes: 1.7% 3 classes: 0.6%
12 classes: 2.6% 7 classes: 1.5% 2 classes: 0.4%
11 classes: 2.4% 6 classes: 1.3% 1 classes: 0.2%
10 classes: 2.1% 5 classes: 1.1% 0 classes: 0%
9 classes: 1.9 % 4 classes: 0.9%

- It is an academic infraction to use or bring another student’s clicker to class, or to lend your clicker to another student. This will be treated similarly to other academic infractions (such as cheating on an exam) and will be subject to university disciplinary procedures. Please remember that the clickers provide you with an opportunity to enhance your in-class learning, and it is expected you will cooperate in making the system work to help you and your colleagues learn.
