CHEM 400A - Spring 2011 - Applications of Chemistry

Course objectives: This course is intended for students who have completed at least two years of chemistry. The course will cover aspects of the chemistry that surrounds us. Timely topics will be covered with an emphasis on how the chemistry works, and advantages and disadvantages of its application. Students will work on projects related to each one of the topics.

Pre-requisites: Chem 232 or Chem 235

Lectures will be held on Monday's and Thursday's from 8:30 am to 9:50 am in Ell 061

Syllabus: Important Change: Attendance at Lectures: Each lecture includes group activities for the development of the projects. Attendance at lectures and in class group activities is required for Chem 400. From Thursday, Feb. 17th until the end of the term (Mar 31) attendance will be taken by filling in a form during the group activities. Absences due to medical reasons should be documented and send to Cornelia. Absences due to medical reasons do not lead to a grade penalty. Any absences that are not justified will lead to a decrease of the student’s grade for each project based on the number of lectures missed (Feb 17 – Mar 10 for project 2 and Mar 14 – Mar 31 for project 3).

Important Dates:

For each group: One submission per group is required by the following deadlines. Each group will be submitting a Word or pdf file by e-mail to cornelia.bohne at gmail.com. The subject line should be: Chem400-report

Project 3:

Format for the report: The final outcome of the project is a report, which will have up to 15 pages (spacing 1.5, font 12), including Figures and Tables. The list of references is additional to the 15 pages.

Fri. Apr. 1 at noon – Submission of final report – note: 10% penalty for each 24h the project is late

For each student: Fri, Apr. 1 at noon – peer evaluation - Each student will be submitting a Word or pdf file by e-mail to cornelia.bohne at gmail.com. The subject line should be: Chem400-peer evaluation - Note: Penalty of 10% for each 24h the evaluation is late

Please try to submit the form by e-mail. If you cannot, please submit the information in a different format (Word, Excel, scanned file) by e-mail. If this also fails, please hand in a hardcopy at my office (Ell 233e) by the deadline
