CHEM 458: Statistical Thermodynamics
Some thoughts on our charge....
"Ludwig Boltzmann who spent much of his life studying statistical mechanics, died in 1906, by his own hand. Paul Ehrenfest, carrying on the work, died similarly in 1933. Now it is our turn to study statistical mechanics. Perhaps it will be wise to approach the subject cautiously."
- David L. Goodstein
Course Objectives
In this synthesis course our goal is to build upon the fundamental tenets of thermodynamics and quantum mechanics. We will apply the principles of statistics to develop (1) the concepts of ensembles and distribution functions; (2) statistical mechanical expressions for thermodynamic functions; (3) models of polyatomic gases, monatomic crystals, polymers, magnets, chemical equilibria, and more.
