Research on the Early Paleozoic:
This research program is concerned with understanding the nature of the Early
Paleozoic world and its paleobiological events. The principal tools used are
conodont micropaleontology, stratigraphy, paleoceanography, paleoclimatology
and some cladistics and geochemistry. Detailed sequential studies of conodont
taxonomy, biostratigraphy, paleoecology, paleobiogeography and some isotope
geochemistry
(Sr, Nd) are
undertaken for broad regions to give virtually worldwide coverage. Currently,
active projects include work in the Appalachians, Cordillera, China, Argentina,
Australia and Europe. Funding is mainly from NSERC along with other indirect
field logistic support especially from the Geological Survey of Canada and
the BC Geological Survey.
Offshore Sedimentary Basins:
A new research program was initiated in 2000
to investigate the hydrocarbon potential of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic offshore
sedimentary basins of British Columbia, specifically the stratigraphy, foraminiferal
and ichthyolith biostratigraphy, and regional thermal maturation patterns.
This has been part of a Major Collaborative Research Initiative called
Coasts Under Stress and is funded by SSHRC/NSERC.
