There have been a lot of articles about Hepatitis C in the news lately. Frighteningly (Hallowe'en themes must be scary) the number of people with Hepatitis C seems to be surging. Here is a very good article from SFGate, "Hepatitis C rates soar - Boomers should get tested" by Dr. Todd Frederick that was published last week. It outlines that there may be as many as 5 million people with HepC in the states, compared to 1.15 million HIV sufferers. Many of the afflicted show no signs of the disease, and this increases risk of spreading infection. While many cases are curable, this is not always the case, and the disease can lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer and death.
Our departmental speaker this week is Dr. Glen Coburn. He will be discussing development of Hepatitis C vaccines. The talk will take place on Friday, November 1 from 1:30 - 2:30 in ECS 124.
