Equipment used in the lab

A complementary way to study igneous and metamorphic rocks in the field ("inverse" approach) is by controlled experimentation at high P and T in the lab ("forward" approach).

Vertical Furnaces

Vertical Tube FurnaceExperiments at 100 kPa, high temperature and under fixed atmospheres are performed in a vertical tube furnace.

Piston CylinderVertical Tube Furnace

Experiments at high T and P (to 3.5 GPa) are performed using a piston cylinder apparatus (the upper mantle machine).
