Physics
Mathematics and Physics are like Astaire and Rogers, Oscar and Hammerstein, Gretzky and Kurri: great on their own, but sublime together. Therefore, any good lesson in Physics begins with Mathematics. Before any phenomenon can be interpreted, it must be translated into a language which is decipherable, namely, Mathematics. This is, in a phrase, the ‘science of Physics.’ However, there is another aspect to physics: a competent tutor of physics establishes sound mathematical principles; a good tutor of Physics inculcates a ‘physical intuition’ which precedes computation and which seeks to describe the world qualitatively, rather than quantitatively. For example, a good tutor of physics explains how it is that a batter in baseball can determine what type of pitch is being thrown before it comes time to swing the bat: body rotation, arm position and arm speed all give the batter helpful hints in hitting his home run! This is the work of the good tutor of Physics.
Courses I am comfortable teaching:
Third Year Electricity and Magnetism Second Year Mechanics Quantum Physics Modern Physics Physics 11, 12. Science 8, 9, 10.
I also enjoy preparing students for challenge and prize exams, such as the C.A.P. (Canadian Assocation of Physicists) Exam.
