Welcome to the homepage of Eric Higgs! There is information on this website tailored for graduate and undergraduate students,
as well as the latest news about research projects and professional activities, including links to separate
sites such as the Bridgland Repeat Photography Project, the Culture, Ecology and Restoration Project, and
the Society for Ecological Restoration.
Trained as a philosopher and ecological planner, I am now
a tenured member of the Department of Anthropology at the
University of Alberta. My studies revolve around technology,
specifically how we relate to nature in a technological
culture. My approach ranges from philosophical reflections
on technology, to hands-on fieldwork on landscape change
(in the Rocky Mountains, primarily Jasper National Park),
to applied policy work on ecological restoration. I am Chair
of the (international) Society for Ecological Restoration.
On January 1st, 2002, I become Director of the School of
Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria.
