I’m writing to say that I think the article in the March edition of Essence about making rabbit stew from a UVic rabbit was very unnecessary, uncompassionate and upsetting. I do agree that the rabbits are damaging the UVic landscape, but remember… the problem was started by humans.

Thank you Kimberly for sharing your viewpoint on the rabbit stew article in the ESSENCE. We appreciate the fact that the problem was caused by humans and this article simply aims to draw attention to the problem. From my perspective, I see this as a positive thing. People are truly not going to respond to this article by going out and making rabbit stew, but are going to respond critically to it and thus raise awareness of the issue. We would like nothing better than to see the best outcome for both the rabbits and the natural ecosystems on the UVic campus and this is what a controversial article like this can help to ensure by promoting critical and educated commentary between interested parties. For further discussion and to see commentary already underway, please click on the “ESSENCE Online” tab at the top of the page, as this is where the discussion forum for this article is located. Thank you again for your viewpoint; your informed opinion is greatly appreciated and it is through this type of communication that a solution can be reached that accommodates both the rabbits and the natural ecosystem.
