Current Opinion Poll: Topics for Module Courses

Would you be interested in a “module” style course in Environmental
Studies? For example, what if you could complete five 1-2 day intense, hands on courses, choosing from a variety of topics, to equal 1.5 units?
This is an idea that the School of Environmental Studies is throwing
around, and they want YOUR feedback. Ideas for modules thus far:

  • how to write grants
  • effectively conveying information
  • environmental governance

The details are yet to be determined – ie:

  • how many modules will constitute one class
  • the logistics, etc

In the meantime, please share your ideas about whether or not this is a good idea, and if so,
help shape your education and degree by putting forward ideas for module topics. This is a great opportunity to fill particular niches and gaps throughout your degree.

Do you think some form of module course program would be a good option for rounding out your degree?

Great Ideas! I learned some of this in my ER 336 course. I think these are critical skills in the real world, that we students just aren’t trained for most of the time.

Proposed idea for module course: Media relations

(I never thought about it until Briony Penn suggested it is key to be able to reach out and touch a wider audience to educate, increase funding options, sway PR on a contensious issue and get volunteers.)

-Check out the book Troubemakers Teaparty (one of the ER 336 texts) to learn about NGO building
-the Sustainability Office might start encouraging more diverse training for students
–many groups already have the skills, just get them in the same room with students

Proposed idea for a module course: practical, hands-on sustainability skills

(anything from growing a garden, to installing solar hot water)

    —more sophisticated funding techniques

(bakesales are yummy, but very limited)
(International options in working holidays, Wwoofing, AIESEC, SWAP, YCI, and career services probably has information that we could tap to start with)

Proposed idea for a module course: Marketing/Communication strategies

(we get bombarded by posters and emails, get creative, and get noticed!)
(also brought up in ER 336…who is the audience for your green message, work or product? What will attract them to give you 30 seconds of their time? What approach or key topic wll make an impression that intiates change?)

Proposed idea for a module course: EQHR: Respecting Diversity

(Why? This is a little more abstract, but coming to recognize that you as an individual are one small part of creation, and that all parts deserve respect, and that you are all interwoven. Respecting biodiversity we ES students get taught, but really living a deep respect for human diversity, also has to be learned. What are your biases? What assumptions will you make about your ES work? Might you write First Nations out of your new park? Do you get frusterated by someone with a pro-industry philosophy? Would you make a decision as an ES expert, if that decision had an unknown level of support by local people?)

      Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for your input! There have been so many great ideas and hopefully lots more to come!
Please remember that to vote for a module idea or to second it, to use the stars under the idea you’re voting for. This is the only way we can get a good feel for what course ideas people like in order to relay that info to the department of ES.
      Enjoy the sunny weather!

    Something that’s a little less office-career-oriented: permaculture.
