Your “Rabbit Stew” recipe is socially and ethically unacceptable. When I attended UVic over 30 plus years ago and resided in Lansdowne Residence, there were NO bunnies. And the reason there are feral rabbit populations all over the place is because of irresponsible pet owners and idiotic pet stores!!! People cave in to the “cute bunny” profile and purchase them unknowingly about their chewing behaviours, diet and special needs. And then they dump them in parks or wooded areas like UVic, the very trails I used to jog on. Did you know a rabbit can get pregnant again within 2 weeks of giving birth? I and my fellow volunteers @ SARS BC work very hard @ educating the public and helping all the “dumped” bunnies, I have 2 of my own that were found as babies under a house with half their siblings dead. I LOVE them to bits, they have a PROPER cage made out of NIC cubes (those pet store cages are good for nothing and far too small), they are litter trained, love their out of cage time and I provide chewy things and modified things for their destructive tendencies. Education is key before procuring ANY pet, I also have birds and a hamster that were no longer wanted. Instead of destroying these defenceless, loveable, beautiful, intelligent, soft and fluffy creatures, WHY not use your newsletter as a vehicle to encourage bottle/penny drives, education and do whatever to stop this epidemic. I challenge you to do this, you WILL feel better about helping these wonderful, living animals rather than bashing their brains out and consuming them as cavemen who had no other choice. I await your response, thankyou for your audience. Robin

The rabbit stew article was horrifying. As a student society you must be able to come together and find a solution, other than encouraging the killing and cooking of innocent rabbits, to restore destroyed landscape.
Katie, thank you for your commentary. Your viewpoint is greatly appreciated. Your article was a cheap attempt at publicity at the expense of innocent creatures. If you are so concerned about the rabbit population you would use your voice to offer real solutions – lobbying pet shops to stop selling rabbits; encouraging responsible ownership; working with the local rescue organization to encourage people surrender their rabbit if they can no longer care for it.
Thank you all again for your comments and passion on this matter.
Sam I encourage you to read the article with an open mind and see that ‘real solutions’ can include those which fall outside of the box of typical methods of dealing with similar problems to which you refer. It is only with an open mind, a critical eye, and positive constructive intentions that any progress can be made here.
Also, I encourage you to visit the discussion forum for this subject which is already underway under the “ESSENCE Online” tab at the top of the page.
