Who is the main target audience of GAPI?

GAPI is relevant in the policy arena where relative performance of species and countries is instructive. It is relevant at the industry level for similar reasons. GAPI is relevant to seafood industry professionals interested in understanding the dimensions of sustainability and what countries and marine finfish species are leading or lagging behind.

What year is the data from? When will GAPI be updating?

All analyses are based on 2007 data, which comprised the most recent complete set of global aquaculture production data available at the time of analysis. When data were unavailable for 2007, the next closest year’s data were utilized.

How are gaps in data addressed by GAPI?  How do we ensure that GAPI’s scores are accurate?

As with any effort to assess aquaculture performance, GAPI faces challenges related to data availability and quality. Limited data coverage, methodological inconsistencies, low-quality metrics, and poor (or nonexistent) reporting structures pose problems for all assessment efforts. While GAPI is focused at the country level, where most aquaculture data are collected and reported by regulatory authorities, data inaccuracies are still likely. Where questions regarding data accuracy or gaps in data remain, GAPI is transparent about how these potential inaccuracies and gaps are treated. This information is summarized within each indicator section. As new and better data become available, the GAPI website will be updated periodically.

To ensure the GAPI scores are reliable and accurate we:

  1. Provide full references for all data utilized
  2. Review all data and scores internally and with an external advisory committee
  3. Consult scientific experts in specific fields to construct the indicators

How can you contribute to GAPI?

GAPI scores are constructed using the best available data and are largely reflective of the state of data availability. Additional or more accurate data regarding  production countries, systems and species are always welcome. Please contact us here.

Why were only marine finfish species assessed in GAPI 2010?

It is important to keep in mind that GAPI currently assesses only a portion of aquaculture production, albeit the sector that is widely recognized as being of the greatest concern in terms of ecological impacts. Marine finfish aquaculture comprised just 7% of global aquaculture production in 2007 but accounts for ~15% by value. Further, the species assessed by GAPI comprise a significant portion of aquaculture product in North America and western Europe.  GAPI’s capacity to score freshwater and non-fish marine products is currently being assessed.
