Link between SST anomalies and wind speed

Observed dependence of mean wind speed and SST (sea surface temperature) anomalies for the NE Pacific off Canada's West Coast (left) and the NW Atlantic off Canada's East Coast. Different curves show response for various time lags (in days), where a negative lag implies that the SST is responding to changes in wind speed, and a positive lag implies that SST anomalies are driving wind speed anomalies (Gemmrich & Monahan, MEOPAR Annual Science Meeting 2015.)
