Tanzania is in Eastern Africa and borders the Indian Ocean between Kenya and Mozambique (it just more than twice the size of California). Zanzibar is a major city in Tanzania. The languages spoken are Swahili, English and Indigenous languages. The local economy is built on mining, agriculture and tourism. Religions practiced here are Christian, Muslim and traditional religions. Zanzibar encompasses the main island of Ugunja and its twin Pemba and several small islets. At Jambiani school there is high student failing rates and class sizes range from 35-65 children. Most children share pencils and the school has no art supplies or art instruction. Furthermore, there are no class textbooks; learning primarily rote and the teaching style is teacher directed.
