Catch-As-Catch-Can: The art of the Hold
Catch-As-Catch-Can: The art of the Hold
What is Catch?
During the 19th century, a combat sport evolved from the new interaction between different cultures. This new form of Wrestling was known as Catch-as-Catch-Can ,or simply ‘CatcH’. Catch is a synthesis of English, American, Native American, Indian, and Japanese forms of Grappling. Catch allowed combatants to use various “holds” to pin or submit their opponent. Since many of the Holds used by Catch-As-Catch-Can Wrestlers where “barRed” or banned, this use of Bared Holds lead to the term “no Holds Bared” - the same term used to describe early MMA matches. Catch is the forerunner of Pro-Wrestling, Submission Wrestling and MMA matches, many Catch Wrestlers had a hand in the development of these new sports.
