LDAP Configuration and Use for Email Clients

 

This document describes how to use an LDAP version of the UVic online directory with popular email clients.  This allows searching from within the email client, rather than with the web interface, which results in a more productive work environment.

Configuring Outlook 2002 (XP) to use the UVic LDAP directory

 

  1. Exit Outlook if it is running

 

  1. Click on start -> Control Panel

 

  1. Click on the Mail control panel and choose EMAIL Accounts

 

 

  1. Click Add a new directory or address book.

 

 

  1. Choose Internet Directory Service (LDAP)

 

 

  1. In the Server Name: type ldap.uvic.ca and then click on More Settings

 

.

 

  1. Type the Display Name as shown and leave the Port set to 389.

 

 

  1. Press the Search Tab at the top of the box, and set the search base as shown.

 

 

  1. Click OK to close the Microsoft LDAP Directory box.

 

  1. Click Next at the E-mail Accounts box and it should now appear as shown below:

 

 

  1. Close the Mail Setup – Outlook dialogue box.

 

 

Configuring Outlook 2000 to use the UVic LDAP directory

 

First of all, Outlook must be in “Corporate or Workgroup” mode to take advantage of LDAP.  To ensure that Outlook is in “Corporate or Workgroup” mode:

 

  1. Launch Microsoft Outlook
  2. Select Tools->Options
  3. Click on the Mail Services tab
  4. Click on Reconfigure Mail Support
  5. If Outlook is in “Internet Only” mode, select “Corporate or Workgroup” and click Next, followed by OK.  Restart Outlook when prompted, then proceed with step 7 below.

 

 

  1. If Corporate or Workgroup is already selected, click Cancel and continue with step 8 below.

 

To install LDAP support, and configure it to use the UVic LDAP server:

 

  1. Launch Microsoft Outlook
  2. Select Tools->Services
  3. Click Add
  4. Select Microsoft LDAP Directory
  5. Fill out the LDAP Directory Service screen as follows:

 

 

  1. Click OK
  2. Restart Outlook when prompted
  3. Launch Microsoft Outlook
  4. Select Tools->Services
  5. Click on the Addressing tab
  6. Place LDAP in front of the local contact list as follows

 

 

  1. Click OK

 

Using the UVic LDAP directory from Microsoft Outlook 2000/2002/XP

 

  1. Launch Microsoft Outlook
  2. Click New to invoke a new mail message
  3. Type a portion of the desired recipient’s name or email address in the To… line and tab down to the next line or message body

 

 

 

  1. If the search string uniquely identifies the recipient and an email address is present, an underlined full name will appear

 

 

  1. If Outlook underlines the search string with red, then an individual could not be uniquely identified

 

 

  1. In this case, right click on the search string and select the desired entry

 

 

  1. Otherwise, click on To… to launch the Select Names tool

 

 

  1. Click Find
  2. Enter the recipients name in the form.  The form for Outlook 2002/XP is more detailed, but otherwise the process is identical

 

 

  1. Click OK
  2. The Select Names tool will display all matches

 

 

  1. To find more information about each entry, right click on the entry and select Properties

 

 

  1. At this point, you may opt to add this individual to the To, CC, or BCC fields of the email, or to your Personal Address Book.

 

 

  1. Click OK to return to the email

 

 

Configuring Eudora 5.1 to use the UVic LDAP directory

 

1.      Launch Eudora

2.      Select Tools->Directory Services

3.      Under Protocols highlight LDAP, then click New Database…

4.      Click on the Network tab and enter the values as follows

 

 

5.      Click on the Search Options tab and fill out the screen as follows:

 

 

6.      Click OK

7.      Place a check in the box beside UVic LDAP Directory by clicking on the box

 

Using the UVic LDAP directory from Eudora 5.1

 

1.      Launch Eudora

2.      Select Tools->Directory Services

3.      Type the name you wish to search for in the Query box, and click Start

 

4.      The results will be displayed in the boxes below

 

5.      Once you identify the desired recipient, highlight their name and click on To, CC, or BCC to add them as recipients of a new email.

 

Configuring Mac Mail (under MacOS X) to use the UVic LDAP directory

 

1.      Launch Address Book application.

2.      Select Address Book-> Preferences.

3.      Select the LDAP tab and click Add

 

 

4.      Fill out the form as follows and click Save

 

 

5.      The LDAP tab should now appear as follows

 

 

Using the UVic LDAP directory from Mac Mail (under Mac OS X)

1.      Launch Mac Mail and Compose a message

2.      Type a name or partial email address into the To: box.  After you stop typing, a list of possible matches should appear. Select the appropriate match by clicking on it
