BC GSS joint campaigns

February 6th, 2012 / by: stacy

At the January 24, 2012 Grad Council meeting, Michael Anthony presented this  GRC Briefing on BC GSS campaigns. The brief contains background on the meetings between BC Graduate Student Societies this year and in past, and the types of joint campaigns we had discussed.

It also proposed consideration of this motion:

The following motion is an altered version of the motion passed by SFU in Sept. 2011.

Whereas the UVic Graduate Representative Council seeks to prioritize the external advocacy work done on its behalf at the federal and provincial level;

Whereas delegates of the Graduate Students’ Societies of UBC, UNBC, SFU, and UVic agreed upon a list of five shared External Lobbying Priorities as follows:

(1)    The province of British Columbia (hereafter the Province) securely funds a British Columbia Graduate Student Scholarship and Debt Forgiveness Program;

(2)    Increased support for curiosity based and non-commercial research;

(3)    The Province and each BC GSS member society’s University adopts a Higher Education Price Index, and that such an index is used when calculating increases to university operating grants and per graduate student funding.

(4)    Graduate student interests are considered in intellectual property and copyright changes;

(5)    A Graduate Student Bill of Rights is developed by all BC GSS member society universities, identifying minimum requirements for student success;

BE IT RESOLVED THAT the University of Victoria’s Graduate Representative Council adopt the five External Lobbying Priorities listed above.

We agreed to discuss this proposal and take a vote by email prior to the next meeting of the BC GSS, which takes place February 18-19.

Please have a look!
