Chem 150 help is available at the first year drop-in centre! Two sessions have been dedicated to Chem 150 help, however you can ask Chem 150 questions at any time the drop-in centre is open.
The laboratory portion of Chemistry 150 is designed to provide practical experience in working with chemical systems, and some of the basic laboratory techniques associated with chemical experimentation. While the subject matter of the experiments may relate to the lecture material, the lab program is intended to emphasize those skills learned by manipulative pratice.
Registration
Students must register for both a lecture section (A) and a lab section (B) to be fully registered for this course. Those students hoping to use the credit of a previous lab mark should NOT register in a lab section, and must e-mail Jane Browning.
Specific goals
Assessment
Performance in the Chem 150 lab will be assessed continuously on the basis of: pre-lab assignments, pre-lab discussions and reports. There will also be an assessment of your practical skills and data recording. Marking guides are posted weekly for each experiment. Please note the pass mark in laboratory courses is 50%, and at least 70% of the laboratory work must be completed and graded. Students are required to attain passing grades in both laboratory and lecture portions of the course.
Materials needed
Lab Manual
The Chem 150 Spring 2012 Lab Manual will be available from the Bookstore in the new year. Students should purchase one and bring it to the first lab session.
Safety Glasses
These will be provided. It is not necessary to purchase them.
Lab Notebook
It is not necessary to purchase a lab notebook for this course.
