Emeritus and Emerita

Chris Garrett - Emeritus Professor

Chris has studied many fundamental aspects of ocean physics, including surface and internal waves, tides and tidal power, ocean mixing, flow through straits, air-sea interaction, and marine pollution.

Ann Gargett - Emerita Professor (Old Dominion University), Emerita Senior Scientist (Institute of Ocean Sciences, Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans)

Ann studies small-scale turbulence and its effect on larger scales in the ocean, largely using observations.

Rebecca Brooks (2023— MSc)

Rebecca is working with Johannes and myself on predicting rogue waves and rip currents in the Northeast Pacific Northwest using WAVEWATCH III numerical prediction system.

Jamie Daniel (2023— MSc)

Jamie is working with Johannes and myself looking at field observations of the incoming wave field in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, with the goal of developing and implementing a prediction system for the likelihood and strength of rip currents into the current regional wave model.

Lauryn Talbot (2023— MSc)

Lauryn is working with Tetjana Ross and myself on statistics of C-PROOF glider data along Line P.

Jia-Xuan Chang (2019— PhD)

Jia-Xuan is working on internal tide generation in idealized fjord-like geometries.

Carmen Holmes-Smith (2020— MSc)

Carmen is working with Johannes and myself on wave runup on beaches using visual data to determine runup statistics as a function of open-water forcing.

Vistors

Yuki Ikeda (2023— Visiting MSc)

Yuki is studying the formation processes of T-S variance in the Kuroshio extension region.

Past Students and Members

Leah Cicon (2020-2022 MSc)

Leah worked with Johannes Gemmrich predicting wave spectra in the Northeast Pacific. She and Johannes have a great paper about a huge rogue wave!

Cicon, 2022

Kurtis Anstey (2019—2022 MSc)

Kurtis analyzed 4 years of current meter data in Barkley Canyon and on the upper slope of the Vancouver Island continental shelf. He demonstrated that mixing is due to internal tides, but with a significant near-inertial component on top.

Anstey2022

Lina Rotermund (2016—2019 MSc)

Lina worked with Bill Williams and myself on flow and tidal mixing in the channels near Cambridge Bay. Lina went on Arctic expeditions, and was part of the team that discovered the wreckage of Franklins’ lost ship the HMS Terror.

She is currently a PhD student at Dalhousie University

Thesis: Rotermund 2019

Rotermund et al 2021

Cailin Burmaster - Marine technician

Cailin was as a Marine Technician on the C-PROOF project, helping to deploy and maintain a fleet of gliders and floats.

Ken Hughes (2014—2018 PhD)

Ken looked at the dynamics of Penny Strait in the Canadian Archipelago. He is currently at Oregon State University as an Assistant Research Professor.

Thesis: Hughes 2018

Hauke Blanken (2015—2017 Phd (incomplete))

Hauke was working with Charles Hannah and myself on drifter release studies. He is now working for the Institute of Ocean Sciences and continuing part time studies with Mechanical Engineering.

Blanken et al, 2020

Rowan Fox - Instrument Technician (2009-2015)

Rowan worked on our instrumentation and co-ordinated our seagoing efforts. He is now working for Ocean Networks Canada, and seconded to Department of Fisheries and Oceans where he is working on autonomous glider operations.

Manman Wang (2014-2016 MSc)

Manman looked at the interleaving of water masses in the Labrador Sea as part of the VITALS project. Manman is submitting a paper, and is now working for Ocean Networks Canada.

Wang, 2016

Di Wan (2010-2013, MSc, with Mike Foreman)

For her MSc Di looked at the dynamics of Cayuquot sound on Vancouver Island, a locale of significant fish farming. Now she is working as a Research Scientist at the Institute of Ocean Sciences and working on a PhD on the dynamics of the flow through the Discovery Islands and Discovery Channel with Mike Foreman and Stan Dosso.

Wan, 2013

Wan et al, 2015
