Kim Juniper, BC Leadership Chair in Marine Ecosystems and Global Change

For the past 24 years my research has focused primarily on the ecology and biogeochemistry of deep-sea hydrothermal vent ecosystems, with submersibles providing samples, imagery and in situ data. The Mariana/South Tonga work follows on from a 5-year study on Axial Volcano in the northeast Pacific and is providing an unprecedented opportunity to test ideas (developed at Axial Volcano) about food web dyanmics in deep-sea hydrothermal systems subject to intense volcanic disturbance. Current research interests include study of the ecology of hydrothermal vent communities on submarine volcanoes in the Mariana and South Tonga arcs, and installation of experiments in the VENUS and NEPTUNE seafloor observatories
