Stephanie Sharuga, SEOS Directed Studies Student

I have completed two directed studies courses with Dr. Juniper.  The first was deep-sea hydrothermal vent ecology, in which I researched and compared various aspects of hydrothermal vents around the world.  Such aspects included geological and chemical characteristics, with an emphasis on biological comparisons of vents on global, regional, and individual scales.  The second directed studies involved analyzing underwater video imagery taken via the ROPOS submersible along transects located at Hornby Rocks in Folger Passage.  I created a community classification system for the analysis, and mapped and analyzed community types and rockfish abundances along transects. I am currently working on another directed studies in which I am analyzing underwater video imagery from transects along the north and south faces of Barkley Canyon.  My goal is to create a community classification system, map the communities, analyze their distributions, and compare the two transects.
