Horde webmail is comprised of a framework, plus several modules. The modules installed at Brentwood are:
- IMP (mail)
- Ingo (filters)
- Kronolith (calendar)
- Turba (address book)
Guide to customizing horde
This is a short guide of customizations you may want to make to your preferences for a better Horde experience. I have configured the defaults as the best setup for a broad range of users, but you may want to make some (or all) of the following adjustments.
Horde
Instead of a blank page when you log in, set up a summary layout
- Click on Horde in the sidebar to bring up your blank layout (the page that is shown when you log in).
- Click the layout button in the top bar.
- This page will allow you to show summaries of mail, address books, calendar, etc. An example layout is shown here:

Check for mail more or less often
- Click on Horde in the sidebar to bring up your default layout.
- Click on Options in the top bar.
- Choose Display Options and change the dynamic menu elements refresh time to suit your needs. Change the Refresh Portal View setting to set the refresh rate for your portal if you have set up a summary layout.
- You can also change the width of your sidebar, your theme, and other various options here.
IMP (mail)
Set up fetching of other accounts
You can fetch any POP or IMAP email source and drop it into your Brentwood webmail. Common uses include checking Shaw or Telus mail directly through this interface.
Note that other webmail services (such as Hotmail, Gmail, Excite mail and Yahoo mail) will probably not work.
- Click on Mail in the sidebar (or any of your email folders) to bring up your email.
- Click the Options button in the top bar to bring up mail options.
- Choose Fetch Mail
- Click on the Edit your preferences... link to bring up the account manager.
- From here, you can add IMAP or POP accounts to fetch mail from. Contact your service provider to get the settings to put in the boxes here.
Turn on message previews
Message previews allow you to see the first line or two of messages in your mailbox. It is disabled by default because it slows down bringing up folders slightly, and puts an additional load on the IMAP server. Mail previews look like this:
http://photos.gavintech.com/enlarge.php?UserName=kloostec&ViewPass=&album=72&photo=8260&offset=2
- Click on Mail in the sidebar (or any of your email folders) to bring up your email.
- Click the Options button in the top bar to bring up mail options.
- Click the Mail Previews link to bring up the mail previews preferences.
- Check the "Enable mail previews" box to turn this feature on.
Configure a different default sorting method
- Click on Mail in the sidebar (or any of your email folders) to bring up your email.
- Click the Options button in the top bar to bring up mail options.
- Choose the Mailbox and Folder Display Options link to configure your sorting method.
- Change the sorting criteria and the sorting direction to suit your preferences.
Set up a virtual folder
- Expand Mail in the sidebar, and choose Search Mail.
- The result of any search can be saved as a virtual folder by choosing the Save search as virtual folder checkbox, and giving the virtual folder a name. The folder will appear under Virtual Folders in your sidebar once you have saved it.
Email address automatic expansion
You can configure Horde to automatically expand entries from your address book when composing email. You could type in To: "garv" and it would automatically expand to John Garvey.
- Click on Mail in the sidebar (or any of your email folders) to bring up your email.
- Click the Options button in the top bar to bring up mail options.
- Choose the Address Books link to configure your composition settings.
- Check the box that says Expand names in the compose window automatically in the background. Then, choose the address books you would like to expand (you should add both Shared Directory and My Addressbook to the Selected Address books).
Ingo (filters)
Set up filters
- Expand the Mail option in the sidebar, and click on Filters.
- Here, you can create and delete filters, plus add addresses to your white and blacklists.
- You can apply filters by going to your inbox, and clicking the filter icon beside the name of the folder (between the refresh and search icons).
You can also add addresses to your whitelist and blacklist from the mailbox view. Check the messages you would like to white or blacklist, and click the corresponding option (beside Delete).
Turba (address book)
Directory Search
The address book in Horde supports searching through the entire Brentwood directory.
- Expand the Organizing link in the sidebar, and go to Address Book
- When performing your search, change the From dropdown to Shared Directory
