Near - Inertial Waves

Internal Waves

Near-inertial waves are internal waves with the longest periods (lowest frequencies, near Coriolis frequency) and contain most of the energy in the ocean internal wave field. They are generated by winds associated with atmosphere fronts, lows and hurricanes. At small scales, they are responsible for most of the turbulence production away from the surface and bottom layers.
