Linguistics 482 Computational Linguistics
Dr. A. Brett & Laura Proctor
Department of Linguistics
University of Victoria
Computational Linguistics is the dynamic, (relatively) new specialization in linguistics devoted to applications of computers in linguistic research and applications of linguistics in computer software and hardware development. The emergence of the World Wide Web makes international communication easier and less expensive but at the same time has increased the demand for good language processing software for translation between languages and for producing better software for indexing and retrieving information. The first part of the course will concentrate on exploring markup languages used to encode textual data.
