There will be no final examination: your final grade for this course will be based upon the scores you obtain on assignments and quizzes. There will be five (5) assignments and three (3) quizzes during the term. Please see the assignment and quiz schedule for the tentative quiz and assignment due dates.
The assignments will account for approximately 60% of your final grade, while the quizzes will account for approximately 40%.
Assignments will usually, although not in call cases, require that a computer program be prepared or modified and run to solve a problem, or to produce some specified results. Some written conclusions, observations, or explanations will also usually be required.Usually, the particular results which must be obtained will be specified along with the description of the problem, and you will be expected to obtain the specified results.
Assignments will be graded on a scale from zero (0) to four (4) marks according to the following scheme:
Mark Conditions 0 If you do not submit an assignment; 1 If you submit an assignment which demonstrates a legitimate attempt to solve the problem; but, you obtain few, if any, of the required results; 2 If you produce about half of the required results; or, there is a major problem with, or error in, your method or program; 3 If you produce most, but not all, of the required results; or, there is a minor problem with, or error in, your method or program; 4 If you solve the assigned problem, and produce all of the required results. Fractional marks will be assigned when it is appropriate.
It is expected, however, that your results will be submitted on time. Thus, one point will be deducted for each week, past the due date and time, that an assignment is late, up to a maximum of three (3) points.
The relationship between the total score you obtain on the assignments and quizzes, and the minimum letter grade you can expect for the course, is as follows:
Grade Score A+ 34 - 35 A 32 - 33 A- 30 - 31 B+ 28 - 29 B 26 - 27 B- 24 - 25 C+ 22 - 23 C 20 - 21 D 18 - 19 A score of less than 18 points normally will result in a failing grade for the course.
When a score includes a fractional part as a consequence of the awarding of part marks, the final score will be "rounded" according to the conventional procedure before the grade is determined. For example, if your score were 29.4, it would be "rounded down" to 29 and you can expect a B+, whereas if your score were 29.5, it would be "rounded up" to 30 and you can expect an A- letter grade according to the foregoing table.
Note that the foregoing table describes the minimum grade you can expect on the basis of your assignment and quiz scores. If, on the basis of your contributions to classroom discussions it appears that your assignment and quiz scores underestimate the extent of your knowledge of the material presented, your final grade will be increased, normally by one letter grade.
