Theatre of the Oppressed

Title: Theatre of the Oppressed
Location: Forum Theatre
Description: Over the past five years I have had the privilege to facilitate a series of workshops, designed specifically for UVic Law, at the law school that draw on the theatrical tradition of “Theatre of the Oppressed.” The demand for these workshops arose from the student body in the 2005-2006 school year, and each year since they have been modified based on student engagement and feedback.

The goals of these workshops have shifted with context and time, but primarily it has been to offer students a vehicle to work with some of the challenges that they face in the learning and ultimately the practice of law, to strength their ethical imaginations, and to do so in an environment that is focused on trust-building, collaboration, and creativity.

I would like to offer these workshops again this summer. Essentially they take place on two Saturdays. Each workshop is four and a half hours in length (including lunch). The first workshop draws on the techniques connected to Image Theatre, and the second the techniques connected to Forum Theatre. It is preferred if students can attend both parts, as the trust built in the first enables stronger work in the second, however they also stand alone. Please do not let your inability to be at both parts discourage you from registering for one.

In talking with the LSS it appears that the following dates are available: July 28, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (Image Theatre) and August 18, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (Forum Theatre).

Everyone is welcome! If you are interested in registering please email me directly: gcalder@uvic.ca. There is a minimum number of students required for each workshop — but space is also limited. Spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. There is some financial assistance available for students with child care responsibilities and travel needs.

I am happy to answer any questions about these workshops!!

Start Time: 10:00
Date: 2012-08-18
End Time: 14:30
