Call for Submissions
Through the imagination we can truly see where we live, but sometimes it’s illuminating to see ourselves through the eyes of others—especially through those trained on us from afar.
In the fall of 2012, The Malahat Review and The Fiddlehead will celebrate the writing of each other’s regions, with the former publishing an East Coast issue and the latter a West Coast issue. Writers with strong connections to either or both regions are invited to submit to the issue that will best provide their work the most apt and safe harbour.
To mark the publication of these issues, The Malahat Review and The Fiddlehead will also launch a joint website where web surfers can also engage in the convergences and differences in the literatures of two of Canada’s remarkable coastlines. Proposals for web content are invited and may be sent to either or both magazines.
Guidelines
- No definite “regional” theme or focus is required. However, only work by writers living in or with a personal connection to either region or both will be considered.
- The East Coast includes all four provinces of Atlantic Canada (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador). The West Coast embraces the whole of British Columbia, including Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii, and the B.C. mainland.
- Submissions of poetry, fiction, personal essay, memoir, cultural criticism, and literary journalism are welcome.
- Submissions of poetry should be comprised of between four to eight poems. Fiction and creative non-fiction submissions may range from 1,000 to 4,000 words in length.
- The inclusion of a brief biographical note is required. If you do not live in either region, please explain why your work is relevant to the issue in question. The Malahat Review and The Fiddlehead recognize that both regions each have a far-flung diaspora.
- No restrictions as to form or approach apply.
- Queries and web-content proposals may be sent by email to malahat@uvic.ca or fiddlehd@unb.ca.
- Neither magazine will accept submissions by email.
- Please send all submissions and mailed queries, accompanied by an SASE and an email address, to:
