Vanessa Annand
Creative Nonfiction Board Intern

Vanessa AnnandVanessa Annand writes frequently. She writes well with a little less frequency.

Her journalism has covered topics ranging from classical horseback riding in southern Spain to why The Swimmer is essential viewing for any lovelorn Calgary man. These ruminations have appeared in Horse Canada, Monday Magazine, Balance, Avenue, and Up!; she's also been a regular blogger for the latter two publications. The best headline she's thought of (alas, too late to have it published) was When Harry Sallied Forth (for a review of the play When Harry Met Harry). While she wraps up her BFA in UVic's Writing Department, she's working at the Martlet as the culture editor and acting as National Opinions Bureau Chief for Canadian University Press.

Her favourite non-fiction book — one that's immaculate in its reverence for the interview — is The Beautiful Fall: Fashion, genius, and glorious excess in 1970s Paris by Alicia Drake. The book was withdrawn from French booksellers' shelves because it got Karl Lagerfeld's primped hackles up; it resides on Vanessa's shelf for the same reason.

Vanessa is currently reading Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut and A Dedicated Follower of Fashion — the collected columns of Holly Brubach, the former style editor for the New York Times.
