What is the Honours Program?
The Honours Program outlines a specialised course curriculum that in Year 4 includes an opportunity for students to conduct an independent research project. Students who wish to pursue graduate studies or a career in earth, ocean, or atmospheric sciences are strongly advised to follow this program.
Who is eligible?
Students will normally apply for admission to the SEOS honours program at the end of the third year of their undergraduate Earth Science Program, although they may apply as early as the end of their second year and as late as the beginning of their last year. The general requirement for admission to the Honours Program is a cumulative GPA of 5.5 in the Earth Science Program at the time of application. While enrolled in the Honours Program, honours students in SEOS must maintain a GPA of 5.5 each year and a course load of at least 12 units per year.
What courses are required?
The courses required to complete the Honours Programs are listed in the UVic calendar. Note that:

How and when to apply?
Students in Years 1 and 2 are encouraged to prepare for the Honours Program by fulfilling the early course requirements. They should make official applications for entry to the Honours Program by contacting the SEOS Honours Advisor at any time before the beginning of their final year of study. For all honours programs except Geophysics and Physical Oceanography, the following three courses must be completed at the time of application: CHEM 245, MATH 201, and MATH 200(205). Students enrolled in joint programs with other departments must meet the honours requirements of both departments. The names of approved students are then forwarded to the Advising Centre for Humanities, Science, and Social Sciences. When the designation HNR eventually appears on the transcripts of these students, they must register themselves in EOS 499.
Detailed information about the Honours Thesis is available in the EOS 499 Course Outline.
