I: ok great so now could you briefly explain why you put name for the group?

P: ok well all of these are related to medical or health, like in a hospital or working with people on health related things. This math related career is math. Here they are more specialized like this is working with ears and this is more the mouth. [ok] Uhm then over here labour and environment, agriculture and farming. Agriculture could not just be labour but it is also more the environment. Sustainable farming, different things like that. Secretary is a desk job and I’m not the type of person to just sit at a desk working at the computer all day [uhm hmm] I called these part time jobs cause these are to me the types of jobs people would have earning money but not as a career. [uhm hmm] Then education is teaching, that is law and those three are kind of biologically related

I: so you don’t like biology?

P: no I do but just not that, like I have biology over here too. So I guess it is more to just those specific things in biology don’t really interest me. So like animals I don’t, like I like animals but I don’t know if I could dissect them stuff like this a lot. I still did the frog…

I: you did a good job

P: I didn’t want to do it thou. At first I was kind of I don’t know I like frogs and …

I: do you have to do dissection for ??? people?

P: if it is for helping them, yeah I guess. But this is like, I dissected the porpoise last year and it was, we were dissecting it to find the cause of death. I’m fine with that I’m just don’t really like dissecting them when they are killed for us to dissect

I: hmm I see

P: it is more of a moral thing there

I: ok so how about now number one you most want to be a medical something?

P: yeah a medical something, I guess that was really generic so easy to put as number one

I: ok

P: so number two, doctors without borders because I’m really interested in medicine kind of the whole chemistry biology side of it and if I became a doctor I would have lots of the education about that, I get to take lots of those courses and then doctors without borders is I’m really interested in travel as well and that includes both. And being able to help others that might not be able to get the help.

I: hm hmm wow good, so number three is …

P: specialized doctor, it is more just uhm you could focus in on one thing and you could really kind of master that and be able to open something, I’m not sure exactly what the would be yet, but something more specialized not like a clinical doctor

I: so do you discuss this with your friends or family before?

P: yeah I have

I: and they support you to be this one?

P: yup

I: wow great.

P: so how about this one (world health organization)?

I: WHO, I haven’t learned too much about this one, I started looking into it a little bit. The world health organization, I guess it is an organization that is part of the UN and they work on disease control and planning for how to control the disease as well as uhm just any health related issue world wide. So that is almost kind of almost like doctors without borders because you are not restricted to just your one area, it is kind of the world

I: uhm hmm so is it a doctor or a researcher?

P: I’m not exactly sure. I guess there is a lot of this to it, kind of research and also the doctors that would travel with the UN so. I have to find out more still but I thought that was something that interested me

I: Ok so this one (Disease research/control) would be researcher right?

P: yeah that would be more research. That is what kind of first got me interested in biology was medicine and research. But then I thought about how it would be almost tedious day after day to be doing the same things and not always getting anywhere so

I: how do you know that?

P: I don’t, I don’t really. I don’t know I guess it is just more an assumption in a way that is why it is on the possible list because I haven’t ruled it off

I: So you changing your mind to be a doctor?

P: I’m not sure, more so leaning towards doctor than research cause I like working with people and this is, as a doctor you are uhm more hands on than research. It is more like, with groups and stuff as well, working with others

I: so you say the doctor deal with people but researcher deal with something like material

P: usually, they have their group, they are still working with people, but medical is more, a lot of different people

I: Variety ok good. So how about this one, math?

P: math related career it is just more interested in math. I’m not exactly sure maybe I guess engineering would be in there but I haven’t really looked into that, I don’t know that much about it.

I: and which one you know more well?

P: uhm I would have to say I know marine biology quite well because I worked, I worked with researchers during the summer at Bamfield. We did research and projects there.

I: uhm but now you don’t like it? Because the experience there?

P: well I had a really good time there, I would go back and I would do the whole forum again but just as a long term kind of job, marine biology, I like the research I liked that side and kind of the individual projects that you got to decide on but just marine biology itself wasn’t my thing

I: so why not because you have fun there but you don’t want it to be a career

P: yeah uhm .. I guess I am more interested in things that affect humans rather than kind of the marine animals. It’s.. I kind of like the larger scale, like the actual visual impact rather than just researching and knowing everything about crabs. But I guess to me it is more affective or.. I’d feel like I was doing more if I was learning about diseases so I could help people rather than just crabs

I: so you mean help people is more..

P: yeah to me..helping people is more what I would like to do, having an impact and knowing that I am doing something

I: mmm good. So how about this one?

P: uhm I used to be interested in speech pathology so working with people, forming words but I don’t know really that much about it other than that

I: but hey originally you want to be this one?

P: uhm you say you used to? It mean now you don’t? right? Or?

I: uhm I’ve never really had a specific job that I’ve wanted to do. Like some people they always knew, they always knew they wanted to be a fireman, they always wanted to do this and I have always just kept my options open [uhm hmm] so I never really looked into actually that many things and I guess now I am kind of seeing more variety so I can’t narrow any thing off. It is still on the list maybe but I just don’t know enough about it. Uhm yeah and I think my dad first recommended or talked to me about that

I: oh he recommend you to be this one?

P: or just mentioned it as something to look into

I: why this one?

P: uhm he took a course, I know I think at UVic actually he did some speech pathology and stuff and he was interested in it so. He didn’t follow through with it but it was just kind of a course of interest. yeah and then working with the hearing impaired uhm I have always been fascinated with sign language. I don’t know it. I can do the alphabet and that is about it but uhm yeah just being able to help someone in that way.

I: so you learn something sign language already?

P: uhm not very much

I: but a little bit?

P: a tiny bit

I: good. Ok so how about your dislikes?

P: farming? Not my thing. I don’t really know why. I guess it is just one of those things that doesn’t interest me very much. I’m interested in the environment but not necessarily a career in it. I did a conference during the summer on climate change at Royal Roads so that was interesting. I was really lost because a lot of people there were from university and had a lot more background knowledge and I knew nothing about it. So I was trying to learn the basics and this advance stuff, so I got a little lost, a little confused but it was good
