Science: Marine biologist & Teacher
I: ok why donÕt you like English? |
|
|
P: I just donÕt find it an exciting subject. I donÕt find it, I mean I love
reading IÕm a book worm and I love poetry and art form like that I just donÕt
think that, IÕve never really had a good English teacher and thought yeah I
like English. I am a good
English student, I get aÕs in that class but I just
donÕt feel it is something I would be passionate about if I taught. If I teach I want it to be something
that I am passionate about like biology ..and pe as well |
I: why you in love with biology?t |
|
|
P: I am not really sure.
I mean my mom is a nurse and with my whole family we have always been very
biological, we have biology in the family, nurses and doctors. It is just sort of a family thing
that has been passing down. So
because of my mom I learn a lot of stuff about biology, like human biology
and animal biology because she grew up on the coast as well. So she was
constantly interacting with the field and my grandparent have a water from house so we have been down there looking at
the ocean and stuff. OS we have
come to learn about a lot of that stuff through common sense and I guess she
just really got me started on that and because she is a nurse I know so much
about nursing that she has just taught me over the years. Little stuff, oh this will help you
with this and this will help you with that.. All my friends are like what are we
going to do? Why would I pull
this muscle why would I do this? |
I: and how about being a nurse? |
|
|
P: nursing yeah yes and no.
I have always thought about it but it doesnÕt, it isnÕt the same as
marine biology. I think animals
they can be very different and human beings are like the same but with tiny bits of
difference and nursing would be a good backup as well but the drive still is
for marine biology |
I: you said your grandparents live very near the ocean? |
|
|
P: yeah they live Saltspring |
I: you go there often? |
|
|
P: I go often there yeah and they live right
on the ocean. They live in long
harbour on Saltspring so a lot of otters on their
dock and they have got sea urchins and huge crabs and barnacles
everywhere. And starfish, lots
of starfish |
I: wow so you are very familiar with the ocean |
|
|
P: yeah I am very familiar. |
I: wow so you swim? |
|
|
P: yeah I swim a lot , IÕm a big
swimmer. And I am hoping to get
my scuba diving degree this summer.
I have been saving up for that so it costs about 300 dollars so. Victoria is really good, it is one of
the best places for scuba diving in cold water and then Australia would be
amazing |
I: so this is why you choose Australia? |
|
|
P: yeah I think it would be really cool to go scuba diving there with
the coral reef down there |
I: wow great. So about
the green ones, which one you think, you most about to be, I means you have a capability
for the future and this one means you expect you will be some day. This one is you predict |
|
|
P: oh so I suspect I will be a marine biologist |
I: yeah and have the most chance to happen in the future |
|
|
P: Ok (writing) |
I: so before Bamfield you may have had some
ideas? |
|
|
P: I didnÕt really have any ideas. Before Bamfield I was totally
like what the heck am I going to do with myself. I was just expecting to find out as I
went and it happened [ok itÕs good] (writing) |
I: so did you choose the sea star to be your object to observe? |
|
|
P: yeah |
I: to do the research? |
|
|
P: yeah |
I: ok |
|
|
P: IÕm hoping that this year, if they are doing summer ones again, to
go to a different conference, last year I went to the ???
one maybe I will go to the sea otter one and I will
get change. |
I: ok this will be the yellow ones the two of them – you think
you could prevent it most |
|
|
P: ok (writing) |
I: so the ???? only
relate to marine biology? |
|
|
P: well it does to the eco system over there it also involves it , anything along the coast that would have to do with
it. Like the temperate rain
forest and the tropical rain forest if you are by Australia and along there
that would be part of like the marine biodiversity |
I: ok so in addition the Bamfield activity
have you done anything related to marine biology? |
|
|
P: other than that course uhm |
I: maybe do some research or |
|
|
P: have I done some? Uhm |
I: or anything related to marine biology |
|
|
P: uhm other that stuff with my parents I
mean I do go the beach, I used to live at the beach basically, I used to be
there every day. They also know
a lot and I used to look in books and stuff and they would read field guides
with us and
would be like oh look there is a certain type of crab. Yeah we used to do stuff like
that. But otherwise since I
wasnÕt really sure about marine biology until Bamfield
so it came to me there. OS I
have plan on doing a lot more marine biology stuff if I can like doing the
porpoises dissection and stuff and the aqua van that we have coming which is
the Vancouver aquarium coming here and doing some stuff like that. Oh and I did a porpoises dissection
last year with the school, but other than that I have just been getting into
it and introducing myself to that.
And I am going to take a shore minders course or shore keepers course
which will show me how to map out an area so I can do research there and
stuff. So yeah |
